Some children find communication hard. Not because they have nothing to say but because the usual routes of expression have been blocked or are still finding their way. For children with developmental needs and disabilities, that gap between what they feel and what they can express can be profound.
Music has a way of crossing it.
Music therapy is not music lessons. It is a clinically established form of treatment, delivered by trained practitioners, which uses sound, rhythm and improvisation to build connection, encourage communication and support emotional wellbeing. The evidence of its impact is well documented. In Special Educational Needs schools, 92% of those surveyed said that music therapy improved their mental health (citation: Nordoff & Robbins, 2026). For many of the children it reaches, it opens doors that other interventions simply cannot.
The David Longdon Foundation is proud to be aligned with Nordoff & Robbins, the UK’s leading music therapy charity. Over six decades, this organisation has become the gold standard for music therapy in the UK, working with children and adults across a range of needs, training the next generation of practitioners and producing research that shapes the field.
By channelling our music therapy fundraising through Nordoff & Robbins, every pound raised by the David Longdon Foundation works harder. Their infrastructure, their expertise and their reach mean that donations go directly to where they are need most, without duplication and without waste. We are not trying to reinvent something that already works beautifully. We are choosing to stand behind it.
David believed that music could changes lives. He was right. The children who benefit from music therapy know it too, even if they might never be able to say so in words.
That is precisely the point.
